Grinding is a process, that involve a physical transformation of matter without altering its nature, and is of utmost importance, because the size of the particles greatly affects the transfer processes required for obtaining ore.
Grinding reduces the average volume of the particles of a solid sample, this reduction is carried out by dividing or fractionating the sample by mechanical mediums up to the desired size.
There are different types of machinery for the grinding process such as bar mills, autogenous and semi-autogenous mills.
Of these the most used at the moment are the ball mills since they can be used so much in primary grinding, secondary and in regrind, this type of mills uses iron balls as a grinding medium with sizes from 4 to ¾ of an inch for coarse grinds and fines respectively.
Semi-autogenous mills (SAG) are also used, this mills also use iron balls but in smaller quantities and have larger quantities of the same material as grinding medium.
In ecn we have an own development called Impact Finder which is a system for the analysis and processing of sound signals to detect impacts, filling level estimation, ore particle size and power prediction for real-time optimization of the process of grinding in SAG and ball mills.
